What is a Weka? I hadn’t seen (or heard of) a Weka until we arrived on the Island, which we share with about 100 endangered North Island Weka.

Weka are flightless birds, unique to New Zealand, and famous for their cheeky, curious and feisty personalities.

Weka are vulnerable to predators like stoats, cats, rats, dogs, hawks – and they struggle to survive in drought conditions; while others die from poison baits and being run over on our roads.
